Vana Care: Revolutionizing Disability Support with a Health-First Approach https://menshealth.com.au/vana-care-revolutionizing-disability-support-with-a-health-first-approach/ Thu, 09 May 2024 03:46:45 +0000 https://menshealth.com.au/?p=57345 In the dynamic world of disability services, Vana Care shines as an exemplar of innovation, compassion, and a forward-thinking approach to health and lifestyle for individuals with disabilities. At its core, Vana Care's story is one of a deep-seated commitment to enriching lives through a unique blend of fitness, daily activity mentoring, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every individual.

The post Vana Care: Revolutionizing Disability Support with a Health-First Approach appeared first on Men's Health Magazine Australia.

The Genesis of Vana Care: A Union of Vision and Passion

The inception of Vana Care was no ordinary event; it was a moment of clarity born from the shared vision of two friends, Jesse and Jason. With Jason’s extensive background in the disability sector and Jesse’s involvement in the fitness industry, they recognized a gaping void in the traditional disability support system. The duo saw that real progress and empowerment for individuals with disabilities didn’t hinge on infrequent and isolated gym sessions but required a more integrated approach to promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Jesse and Jason’s innovative solution involved retraining personal trainers from Jesse’s gyms to serve not just as fitness coaches but as life coaches for individuals with disabilities. This pioneering approach went beyond the confines of the gym, encouraging activities that fostered independence and a healthier lifestyle, such as walking to local shops or choosing stairs over elevators.

The Impact of Vana Care: Transforming Lives and Communities

The impact of Vana Care’s program on its participants was both immediate and profound. Clients experienced not just physical benefits but also significant improvements in their confidence and overall quality of life. This holistic approach to disability support, which emphasized lifestyle over mere exercise, quickly garnered positive feedback and referrals, highlighting the effectiveness of Vana Care’s model. Jesse went on to share “Our internal motto is ‘Out Care’ the competition.”

Today, Vana Care stands as the highest-reviewed disability support service in South Australia, a testament to its innovative approach and the tangible difference it makes in the lives of its clients. With a dedicated team of 150 employees and an ever-expanding family of clients who view Vana Care as their second home, the organization’s growth reflects its success in creating inclusive and health-oriented communities. Jason Wisniewski went on to share “We’re big believers in taking risks on new things & experimenting with new ways to make our team’s lives better and empower them to do a better job for the people they support.”

Looking Ahead: Vana Care’s Vision for the Future

As Vana Care looks to the future, it remains committed to its founding principles of empowering individuals with disabilities through health and lifestyle support. The organization’s continuous growth and the positive reviews it receives are a clear indicator of its vital role in the community and the demand for its compassionate, innovative approach to disability support. Jesse states “A huge part of our success so far is listening to the people we support and knowing it’s better to put profit aside to focus on the people.”

Vana Care’s story, from its inception to its current success, serves as a powerful example of how innovative thinking and a genuine commitment to improving lives can reshape an entire sector. Jesse and Jason’s vision has not only transformed the way disability support is provided but has also set a new standard for integrating health and lifestyle improvement into the care and empowerment of individuals with disabilities.

A Movement Towards a Healthier, More Inclusive World

Vana Care’s journey is more than just a tale of organizational success; it is a movement towards a more inclusive and health-focused approach to disability support. Through its pioneering programs and dedicated team, Vana Care continues to champion the idea that every individual, regardless of their abilities, deserves the opportunity to lead a healthy, active, and fulfilling life. As Vana Care continues to grow and evolve, its impact on individuals, families, and communities serves as a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of compassion, innovation, and unwavering belief in human potential.

8 pieces of equipment you need to turn your garage into a home gym https://menshealth.com.au/how-to-turn-your-garage-into-a-home-gym/ https://menshealth.com.au/how-to-turn-your-garage-into-a-home-gym/#respond Tue, 23 Apr 2024 23:00:17 +0000 https://menshealth.com.au/how-to-turn-your-garage-into-a-home-gym/ Creating your own home gym is more achievable than you might think. By adding some of this equipment to your garage, you'll be well on your way

The post 8 pieces of equipment you need to turn your garage into a home gym appeared first on Men's Health Magazine Australia.

]]>
BEING A MEMBER of a commercial gym isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Be it the commute, limited opening hours, gym floor congestion or simply needing to spend more time at home with the family, there are a number of reasons why it might not work for you. One way to get around some of these issues is by adding a few valuable pieces of equipment to your garage and turning it into a home gym.

Before you jump the gun and throw your hard-earned cash at the first high-priced piece of flashy equipment that shows up on your Instagram feed, make sure you consider the following questions to see if a home gym is right for you.

 • Are you happy to train alone? A commercial grade gym in your garage sounds great, but you could long for a social environment to train in.
 • Do you consider yourself introverted? If you’re extroverted and get energy and motivation from being around other people, starting a home gym might not be the best idea.
 • Does your budget match what you want to achieve? Think about your goals and what equipment you need to achieve them. E.g. If you want to be a power lifter who can deadlift over 200kg, flooring, a plate set and a bar may break your budget.
 • Do you have adequate space to do what you intend to do?
 • Are your reasons for starting a home gym justifiable?
 • Do you have somewhere else to put your car (s)?

Many people make the mistake of purchasing unnecessary and expensive equipment only to let it all collect dust and then be thrown on the nature strip to join hundreds of other pieces of landfill. That being said, if you answered yes to the above questions, congratulations, a home gym would likely be a good investment. To help you take the next step, we’re breaking down the important pieces of equipment you’ll need to elevate your home gym from a loose assortment of gear scattered around your garage floor to a commercial-grade sweat centre you can brag to your friends about. Let’s get into it.

1. 20kg VULCAN Fitness Barbell

Gym Equipment

An essential piece of equipment that features in a number of key exercises (bench press, deadlifts, squats. etc), an Olympic barbell should be one of your first purchases when building a home gym. It’s especially worth investing in a barbell if you’re a taller person, as smaller bars can be restricting. They’re usually 220cm, so make sure you have enough room to use it. This one from VULCAN Fitness is one of the best you’ll find, with commercial-level quality, durability, and spring collars.

SHOP NOW

2. 100kg VULCAN FITNESS Bumper Plate Set

Gym Equipment

The total weight of your plates can vary, but generally, you’ll want at least 100kg for those heavier compound exercises. Aim to buy enough weight to satisfy your training style needs (e.g. power, strength, hypertrophy or endurance) and consider how much you can lift for your main compound movements (bench press, squat and deadlift).

SHOP NOW

3. VERVE Zen Power Rack

Home Gym Equipment

The rack is central to all of your compound exercises. This is also where you can hang your rings, do pull-ups and tie your resistance bands from various angles. Spotters are hard to come by when training from home, and a huge benefit of having a power rack like this one from VERVE is that there’s adjustable safety bars. Make sure you utilise them, unless you want to feature on @gymfuckerytv.

SHOP NOW

4. Celsius BC2 FID Bench

Home Gym Equipment

Landing a sturdy bench will enable you to perform a wide variety of exercises. Just make sure you get one like this, with adjustable heights allowing for incline and decline variations.

SHOP NOW

5. Resistance bands

Various thicknesses will provide various resistance levels. Resistance bands are comprehensive as they can be used to target any muscle group and also be used for warm-up activation drills.

SHOP NOW

6. Technogym Skillup

Cable exercises should play a part in any truly holistic workout routine, and few exercises will deliver more of a full-body burn than a cable skier. If that’s what you’re looking for, it’s difficult to ignore the new Technogym Skillup, which uses dual resistance technology to integrate a cardio workout with strength training. And thanks to its barrier-free design, Skillup can fit into just about any layout.

SHOP NOW

7. Peloton Tread

Investing in a treadmill will remove the final reason you’d have to leave your garage for a workout (cardio). There isn’t much to say about the Peloton Tread that hasn’t already been said – including what’s been said by us. The Tread finally made its way down under in 2023 and it’s been just as big of a hit here as it has everywhere else. Some treadmills only act as a vessel for running on the spot. Not the Tread. Exertainment (exercise + entertainment) is at the core of the Peloton philosophy, materialising in a seemingly endless range of interactive classes and workouts designed to suit every type of runner.

SHOP NOW

8. Bose Surround Speaker System

The garage can be a quiet, dark and lonely place. Music will help you get into the zone and smash out a decent workout.

SHOP NOW

Having access to a home/garage gym is a luxury and incredibly convenient. Just make sure your decision aligns with your personality and lifestyle, and most importantly, does not interfere with achieving your goals. Happy training!

The 6 best CrossFit shoes to maximise your workouts https://menshealth.com.au/the-6-crossfit-shoes-to-maximise-your-workouts/ Fri, 19 Apr 2024 02:59:58 +0000 https://menshealth.com.au/?p=58034 With CrossFit season in full swing, now is the time to find a pair of box-ready shoes that can handle burpees, box-jumps and rope climbs without blowing out

The post The 6 best CrossFit shoes to maximise your workouts appeared first on Men's Health Magazine Australia.

]]>
THE CROSSFIT COMMUNITY is buzzing right now with the quarterfinals of the CrossFit Games in full swing ahead of the Games proper in August. With athletes from all corners of the globe pushing their bodies to the limit to secure a spot in the final competition, questions are starting to loom over who will make the 2024 cut.

Which makes it a great time to get some box-fresh, Box-ready shoes, the kind Aussie legend Jay Crouch is currently rocking with during his workouts – see below.

A word of warning; looking for the perfect CrossFit shoe can be a needle-in-haystack endeavour; the haystack being the CrossFit box, and the needle a shoe that can withstand burpees, box jumps, and rope climbs without falling apart.

Many of us are accustomed to using a single shoe for all our fitness and activity needs. Whether it’s a gym session, running, a game of tennis or golf, or even a busy day of errands, you can find yourself relying on the same worn-out pair of classic sandshoes. But the fitness landscape has evolved, and it’s time you adapt with it. Investing in the right pair of runners and gym shoes not only equips you to perform complex CrossFit moves, like the clean and jerk correctly, but also gives you peace of mind that your feet are locked in and prepared for whatever they’re confronted with.

Why you need CrossFit shoes

When it comes to physical fitness, wearing appropriate footwear is essential. If you ask any runner whether they would knock out a 10 or 15-km run in a pair of random sandshoes, it would be met with a laugh. The same goes for CrossFit shoes. Run, jump, power clean, rope climb, and burpee: all your favourite CrossFit exercises are more comfortable if you’re in good shoes.

One of the most noticeable differences between CrossFit shoes and running shoes or other cross-training footwear is the sole. A stiffer sole is key for powerlifting, Olympic lifting and squatting movements. It gives you feedback on explosive movements and stability in the power movements. CrossFit can be challenging on our bodies, and it can be tough on our shoes. An all-mesh upper or soft sole could get totally torn up. One rope climb can rip up the bottom of a shoe. Strapping into a rower or running outdoors can put wear and tear on the outer layers.

Some key features that separate CrossFit shoes from your run-of-the-mill gym or walking trainer include:

 • Smaller heel drop size: keeping feel more parallel to the ground, distributing weight evenly across your foot.
 • Correct cushioning: rather than opting for more or less cushioning, a balance in between is critical for responsiveness and support.
 • Wide toe box: this allows a snug fit for feet to jump, run, and weight lift simultaneously safely without putting stress on toes.

Nano X3 Adventure

We start our list with the always-popular Nano X3 Adventure, a top-performing CrossFit shoe designed to tackle any intense workout without sacrificing foot comfort. The shoe boasts an important water-resistant upper mesh and a lace closure system, ensuring a secure and customisable fit. The shoe is loaded with a classic cross-fit midsole drop of 4mm, which creates a stable and supportive platform for lifting, while the wide toe box allows for natural foot splay during explosive movements.

Additionally, the shoe has a full rubber outsole that provides excellent traction and durability – a perfect selection for newcomers to the CrossFit fitness game.

EARLY MORNINGS ARE TOUGH ENOUGH AS IT IS, so the last thing you need is to look in the mirror and see two tired, puffy eyes staring back at you.

At just 0.5mm thick, the skin around the eyes is the thinnest on the body, which means that it’s the first area where tell-tale signs of ageing appear. And while we’re all susceptible to pesky shadows and lines, some of us are genetically more predisposed to eye nasties than others.

Whether your problem is raccoon-like dark circles, wrinkles, bags, or all three, one thing’s for sure: it takes more than a quick dab of eye cream to remedy the issue. However, with the right combination of products and treatments, anyone can lift their eye grooming game. Here’s how.

Upgrade your tools

Tell tale dark shadows and bags mean that a quality eye product is a necessity. And though every skincare brand and their dog has an eye cream, not all of them are made equal – far from it, in fact. You can save on moisturiser and SPF, but when it comes to serums and products targeting the eye area, it pays to splurge.

Australian-owned and made premium cosmeceuticals brand, Mx Skincare, specialise in scientifically formulated products, which are created to target specific skin concerns, including the delicate under-eye area. The Dark Circles & Puffy Eyes Solution is a triple whammy collection of products containing powerful peptides and potent active ingredients, including Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid, all designed to stimulate collagen production, facilitates cell repair and improves skin firmness.

Touted as the ‘world’s first’ clinical strength retinal for the eye area, Medik8’s Crystal Retinal Ceramide Eye Cream features a twin-encapsulation retinal delivery system to allow a gentle release of Vitamin A, which helps smooth crow’s feet and to visibly brighten dark circles. Use at night (skin regeneration is faster at night than during the day) and wake up looking sharp.

For a fast-acting fix, Sunday Riley’s 5 Stars Retinoid + Niacinamide Eye Serum is a winner. An hydrating gel serum works to plump the look of lines and prevent the signs of premature skin ageing, counteracting dark circles and creating the appearance of youthful-looking eyes.

Patch repair

Just as there’s a bevy of targeted facial masks available a cluster of brands have developed single-use masks specifically designed for the eye area, which makes complete sense given its aforementioned thinness.

Self-Dissolving Microneedle Patches from Wrinkles Schminkles delivers active ingredients – ingredients including collagen, hyaluronic acid, caffeine and peptides – deep into the skin through 1,800 micro needles for increased absorption. These powerful patches are designed to hydrate, de-puff, tone and smooth the delicate under-eye area, taking you from raccoon to bright-eyed in no time.

The Derminfusion Eye Mask by Dr. Dennis Gross, meanwhile, helps improve age-related volume loss and fill the appearance of fine lines via a vitamin infusion combined with stimulating ceramides.

Lighten your load

An absolute game-changer in the skincare world was the invention of the LED facial mask. Originally developed by Nasa for plant growth experiments, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have since been found to have healing, rejuvenating, and stimulating properties for skin. And while you’ve likely seen a swag of facial masks on your Insta feeds, there’s only a handful of brands that have created masks designed specifically for the eye area.

CurrentBody LED Eye Perfector uses proven technology to help ramp up collagen production and kickstart your skin’s healing process, which means a significant reduction in fine lines, wrinkles eye bags and dark circles.

Using four powerful LED wavelengths and 80 professional-strength LEDs, results can be seen in as little as two months with dark circles, firmness, under-eye bags, pigmentation, and overall skin tone all tackled in an easy three-minute session daily.

Pay the pros

When the passage of time truly begins to take its toll (aka hitting 40) even the most fastidious of groomers will find that their regime is no longer cutting it. So, to really counter stubborn hollowness and dark circles, you’ll likely need to turn to injectables.

“The reason the eye area is so susceptible to ageing is because the natural facial fat that sits immediately under the skin of the eye tends to descend with age, causing an exposure of the orbital bone, resulting in an aged, hollow, tired appearance,” explains founder of Contour Clinics, Dr Josh Wall. “Also, because the skin is so thin, you can see the underlying muscles with age resulting in unpleasant dark circles, which causes the individual to appear tired, and in some cases unwell.”

One of the most popular treatments with Wall’s male clients is filler in the tear trough (under the eyes) area. Made up of hyaluronic acid – which is a natural substance found normally in the body’s skin, joints, and fluid within the eye – filler works to re-volumise the area and plump out the skin, eradicating the hollowing that’s been causing your under-eye bags and dark circles. The result is a more youthful, healthy, rested and wide awake appearance.

“That’s where tear filler is the most effective treatment for the under-eye area as it causes a smoothing of the under eye region, a reduction in dark circles and a reduction in fine lines.”

Brow benefits

Outside of anti-ageing products and treatments, there is an optical illusion hack that can instantly add some eye area pep: a brow shape.

As men age, our eyebrows often become overgrown. So, if you’ve got bushy eyebrows that would make even Noel Gallagher blush, then just cleaning up some of the excess hair can really help shave off the years. And while you may think that a sneaky swipe of your razor is a solution, a stubbly unibrow is never a good look. Instead, play it safe and pay a professional.

Face of Man have been a staple in Sydney’s male grooming scene for more than 40 years and their premium new HQ is the place to go for some serious TLC. Amidst the offering of in-house barber, swanky Elemis facials and massage, punters can also get their brows expertly shaped.

Working with the brow’s natural lines to ensure a perfect contour, therapists can tame unruly facial follicles into an eye-area masterpiece making your eyes look more open and your face more youthful.

Stepper-Ton: the cardio workout that’s putting the fun back in fitness https://menshealth.com.au/stepper-ton-the-cardio-workout-thats-putting-the-fun-back-in-fitness/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 01:53:14 +0000 https://menshealth.com.au/?p=57566 Julius Burphy, founder of the viral TikTok workout on why a fun, step-based, dance-inspired routine could change your attitude to cardio

THE COVID PANDEMIC and accompanying lockdowns were undoubtedly a tough time for everyone but there were plenty of bonuses to come out of that period of mass global uncertainty and its associated sense of ennui: more flexible workplace arrangements and virtual workouts, for example. But few COVID artefacts can claim to be as at once as healthy and as fun as Stepper-Ton, a workout that’s gone viral on TikTok in the past year.

Founder Julius Burphy, who was in Australia last week taking locals through the workout in his role as an ambassador for powdered hydration supplement Liquid I.V, says the workout was born out of the boredom he felt during lockdown.

“There was a lot of down time during the pandemic and working in the fitness industry for a long time and doing the same classes over and over, it just got very boring to me,” says Burphy, 32, a trainer and former bodybuilder from Manchester. “I’ve always wanted to do something fun, something that would be uplifting.”

Burphy looked into Zumba and CrossFit but wanted something that gelled with his exuberant, fun-loving personality. “I was looking to step aerobics and I thought that it could be a really fun way of putting hip-hop, R&B, Afrobeat stuff, a lot of stuff that represents me, into a workout,” he says.

He remembers ordering a stepper and practising at home, inspired by the many step aerobics classes that have come before him. Eventually he came up with a free-form, 45-minute step class he says can burn up to 500 calories an hour.

Burphy’s classes quickly became a hit on TikTok – Burphy’s recent posts have garnered over 4.4m likes on the platform. The response surprised the trainer, who believes the reason for the workout’s popularity is simple: it’s fun. “I think the reason why it blew up that much is because people just like watching me and my customers having fun in class,” he says. “And that’s what I was always trying to do. When people come to class I make sure they have the best time ever. And when it radiates like that on camera, on film, I think a lot of people just gravitate towards it.”

So, why would you choose a Stepper-Ton class over, say, a HIIT session? Burphy says the workout is a serious calorie burner that’s great for fat loss and, most-importantly, isn’t boring. “For anyone who doesn’t like running on treadmills, or doesn’t like high-intensity interval training, this class is the best class for them.”

It’s for this reason that as well as offering a dynamite cardio burn, the workout can also pay significant mental health dividends, Burphy says.

A recent study published in the British Medical Journal found dance to be the best form of exercise to treat depression, proving more effective than simply prescribing participants with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Dancing produced the largest reductions in depression symptoms among study participants, while exercises like walking or jogging, yoga and aerobic exercise with therapy were runners-up.

Similarly immersive, Stepper-Ton requires concentration and focus to follow the designated moves, while the group dynamic offers important social connections, Burphy says.

“From the feedback I get from my members, they tend to come in feeling all gloomy because they had a tough day, or they’re overthinking a lot of stuff and then after class they’re all in a better mood,” he says.

Burphy was in Australia for the launch of Liquid I.V., conducting classes at the ‘House of Hydration’ at North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club. When asked about the appeal of the product, Burphy again draws on the desire for variety and stimulation. “I’m just one of those guys that finds drinking water a bit boring after a while,” he says. “So, when Liquid I.V. reached out to me, and knowing they were the number one powdered hydration brand in the US, it was a no-brainer for me to partner up with them.”

Burphy, who is currently criss-crossing the globe spreading the Stepper-Ton gospel, likes the mobility offered by Liquid I.V.’s powdered hydration.

“It is very convenient,” says Burphy, who favours the Lemon Lime flavour. “It’s very easy to use. If I want to take it on a trip, it’s really good to take wth me.”

Research commissioned by Liquid I.V. found three-quarters of Australians (76%) agree they live a wellness-focused lifestyle, with water consumption/hydration (66%) considered one of the top three most important factors of wellness, alongside mental health (77%) and physical health (66%). The majority of Aussies (97%) agree that maintaining hydration is important to their overall wellness, so much so that six in ten (61%) Aussies are open to trying different hydration hacks or shortcuts. However, almost two-thirds (63%) still admit to feeling dehydrated at least once a week, while a staggering 1-in-4 (25%) report experiencing dehydration daily.

Having conquered social media, Burphy’s goal now is to take his workout to the world. “I feel like everywhere around the world, there’s someone that would like to do a Stepper-Ton class,” he says. “Hopefully there will be a Stepper-Ton class for everyone one day.”

Liquid I.V.® Hydration Multiplier is available at Chemist Warehouse for $19.99 for a 10-pack and $39.99 for a 24-pack.

What’s driving Australia’s cocaine problem? https://menshealth.com.au/whats-driving-australias-cocaine-problem/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 03:17:27 +0000 https://menshealth.com.au/?p=57367 A psychiatrist reveals five factors that can lead to addiction, from undiagnosed ADHD to performance pressure and chasing status

The post What’s driving Australia’s cocaine problem? appeared first on Men's Health Magazine Australia.

]]>
IT’S NOT A title we, as a nation, would covet or advertise, but Australia is a global leader in consumption of cocaine. Figures from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare show 2.9 million Aussies (14%) admit to using the drug at least once, while lifetime usage has increased by 11 per cent since 2019.

When it comes to drug and alcohol use, no individual’s drivers towards usage are the same – which is also why treatment for addiction should never be a one-size-fits-all approach. However, through my two decades as a consultant psychiatrist working across both the public and private sectors in Australia and abroad, I’ve seen patterns among users of cocaine.

To help identify triggers and underlying issues that can lead to cocaine abuse and dependency, here are five common environmental factors that can influence a person taking the drug regularly.

1 Self-medicating

We’ve seen clients at my clinic, The Banyans Healthcare, who have been struggling with cocaine usage, who we discover are experiencing undiagnosed ADHD and are using cocaine to self-medicate. Why might they do this? Because cocaine is a stimulant and can therefore help with focus and concentration, which are common areas people with ADHD struggle with. In fact, people with ADHD are 50 per cent more likely to develop a drug or alcohol use disorder than individuals who don’t suffer from the condition. Prescribed and legal ADHD medication is also a stimulant, which has been designed for use in people diagnosed with ADHD through their GP. This is a much safer and fit for purpose solution to help treat the symptoms of ADHD.

2 Performance pressures

With a large disposable income, high-pressure working environments, long working hours and an intense social scene, cocaine is often the substance of choice for Australian C-Level executives. People working in such positions, particularly those in industries where there is enormous pressure to achieve results, may turn to cocaine due its stimulating effect, hoping to increase their productivity, and keep them awake and able to perform for longer. Feelings of happiness and confidence, along with increased energy, alertness and mental sharpness, make cocaine the drug of choice for these high achievers. Yet, this energy is short-lived and unsustainable, with users often crashing as their bodies are unable to keep up physically.

3 Chasing social status

We often see clients who started using cocaine almost as a status symbol. There is a public perception that cocaine is a ‘low-risk’ drug, as it is more expensive to obtain, carrying with it a sense of glamour and exclusivity. There’s also a perception that it’s not as addictive as other drugs. Similar to alcohol, users may feel peer-pressured into partaking in the drug. We know that cocaine and alcohol are often present in some business networking forums, with the drug forming a part of social networks in certain industries. Dependency can develop after a very short period of use and may go unrecognised for a long time.

We see a large proportion of users describe themselves as ‘social’ users who may not be aware that ‘occasional or social use’ has actually morphed into addiction.

4 ‘Low-risk’ perception

While individuals who begin using cocaine socially often classify themselves as recreational users, this regular usage can easily turn into a dependency or addiction. The perception that cocaine is ‘not as bad’ or ‘less addictive’ than other illicit drugs is incorrect. Risk factors include raised body temperature, blood pressure and heart rate. Using large amounts can lead to overheating, strokes and heart attacks. Even in smaller doses, cocaine can induce anxiety, paranoia, agitation, headaches, dizziness, insomnia and aggressive behaviour.

Additional costs of heavy prolonged use include: damage to the nose and respiratory system; risk of blood clots/aneurysm; sexual dysfunction; and depression/psychosis.

5 Comedown avoidance

Cocaine is often consumed with alcohol and users can feel less intoxicated due to the stimulant effect of cocaine, leading them to drink more. Alcohol has a depressant effect that slows down your body and brain messaging, while cocaine is a stimulant that speeds things up. Together, they can enhance a high, or reduce unwanted effects separately associated with alcohol or cocaine use. But the toll these conflicting substances can exact on your body is substantial, especially if done regularly.

There is a misconception that alcohol can curb the withdrawal and anxiety when cocaine’s effects start to wear off. However, alcohol can increase cravings for cocaine, creating a cycle of misuse of both substances. Coming down off cocaine can sometimes feel like getting the flu; but for longer term users, there is little or no hangover, and they are able to work the following day without impairment or consequence. This feeds into the idea that cocaine use is less likely to negatively impact a person’s life than other illicit drugs and is associated with high functioning. The truth, however, is that this leads to reliance on the drug, with the person needing to take more and more to get the same effects – a process that continues until their body and mind can’t cope with it anymore.

The triggers above are only a snapshot of what can spark a person’s battle with substance abuse. Addiction is a very real – and complex – experience to navigate, with those in the midst of battling substance abuse subject to a range of unique and widespread challenges in overcoming it. It’s essential to seek professional help so that you can begin recovery and get your life back on track. Seeking assistance can assist in breaking the cycle of addiction, help identify underlying issues and build new habits.

4 big health benefits of dark chocolate https://menshealth.com.au/4-big-health-benefits-of-dark-chocolate/ Thu, 28 Mar 2024 02:02:53 +0000 https://menshealth.com.au/?p=57259 No, we aren't joking, dark chocolate is now considered a new member of the superfoods club, and a perfect pre-gym snack.

WITH EASTER FAST APPROACHING, that means two things, a long weekend and overindulgence in chocolate. Up there with kale or bok choy, you’ve likely heard that the variation of dark chocolate is referred to as a ‘superfood’. I know, it is an exciting find for those who love a choccy snack from time to time. However, research backs up the claim and has shown it can improve both heart health and blood pressure, likely due to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant content, and even improve mood and reduce the risk of chronic disease.

Most experts credit the health benefits to chemical compounds called polyphenols, specifically flavonoids, plant compounds that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, explains Kristin Kirkpatrick, R.D., a Denver-based dietitian and author of Skinny Liver.

But dark chocolate’s superfood status is likely a bit overblown, says Alan Aragon, M.S.Men’s Health nutrition advisor. “Dark chocolate just happens to have beneficial compounds that favourably influence various health parameters when consumed judiciously.” In this case, judiciously means this: consume in moderation. Since chocolate is energy-dense (read: it’s got 150 to 170 calories per 30g), scarf it down indiscriminately and you’ll easily wind up taking down excess calories and weighing down the scale, he notes.

Want to snack the right way? Look for dark chocolate with a cocoa content of at least 70 per cent – though the higher the better, Kirkpatrick says. (Any less and you’re likely dealing with a mix of cream and other add-ins, she says.)

Then, know what kinds of benefits you’re biting into – starting with these three biggies.

Dark chocolate gives you a magnesium boost

Did you know up to 68 per cent of people might not get the proper amounts of magnesium, an important player in over 300 bodily processes? Dark chocolate is a solid source of the mineral, says Aragon. About 100g of dark chocolate, packs about 228 mg magnesium, putting you well on your way to the 400 mg recommended a day.

Dark chocolate is a great pre-workout snack

Normally, you wouldn’t think of eating candy before hitting the gym but celebrity trainers Ryan and Eric Johnson, brothers who work with Scarlett Johansson among other stars, advocate nibbling on a little dark chocolate before exercising.

The pair explained to INSIDER that because dark chocolate releases dopamine in your brain, linked to pleasure and the reward system, you’ll actually look forward to those early morning workouts if you nibble some chocolate first.

“It creates this positive feedback loop with your brain — now that you’re getting this piece of chocolate before your workout you’re creating a positive association with your training session and you’re getting more excited to get to the gym… you have something to look forward to,” Ryan told the outlet.

Some research even suggests that eating chocolate could make you perform better, too. In 2011, researchers found that mice given epicatechin, a flavonoid found in cacao, were able to run for longer distances compared to mice who didn’t receive any of the ingredient.

Of course, it’s best not to overdo it: The Johnsons recommend eating only two to three pieces, or 30-50 grams of chocolate INSIDER reports.

Quality matters too, according to Dr. Francisco Villarreal, co-author of the 2011 epicatechin study. He explained to The New York Times that heavily processed chocolates have barely any epicatechin, so you’ll want to swap out that milk chocolate for dark.

Dark chocolate helps your heart

Your workouts get your heart pumping, but thanks to anti-inflammatory and blood pressure-improving effects of flavonols—a type of flavonoid – in dark chocolate, the candy could help improve heart health, says Kirkpatrick.

One study of healthy guys who ate a little less than 0.5 g of a cocoa flavonol twice a day for two weeks saw increased blood vessel functioning, decreased blood pressure, and improved cholesterol levels. That same study also found these men were at a lower risk of developing heart disease, having a heart attack, or dying from either one.

You brain could benefit from dark chocolate

Flavonols are incredibly good for brain health. They could enhance brain cell functioning, protect vulnerable brain cells, and even stimulate brain cell regeneration, perhaps by bolstering the effect of protective proteins, according to a review published in Frontiers in Nutrition.

The result: you’ll likely be able to pay better attention, think faster, and see improvements in memory, according to the study.

But these benefits could have an even bigger impact: Flavonoids found in dark chocolate may someday be useful in potentially treating neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. One study in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease found an association between eating chocolate and reduced risk of cognitive decline, perhaps due to protective effects of the cocoa flavonols.
