The post We tried the Vitruvian Trainer+. Is it worth the hype? appeared first on Men's Health Magazine Australia.

]]>
IF YOU WANT to stay fit and strong, the traditional avenues dictate that you must decide between a commercial gym membership and investing in a home gym. Both have their flaws, and they certainly aren’t inexpensive. A gym membership will get you all the equipment you need, but you’ll have to put up with crowds and the congestion, noise and smells that come with them. If a home gym is more to your liking, you’ll need to be willing to make several costly purchases, and of course, have the requisite space to house such a sanctuary of sweat. But what if there was a third option?

As someone who has gone down each of these paths and teetered between both for some time without committing to any one plan of action, Vitruvian’s flagship product, the Trainer+, had been on my radar for a while. In essence, the Trainer+ is an all-in-one home gym. It’s a compact, portable platform that can generate resistance up to 200kg. With a variety of attachments, the Trainer+ allows you to perform just about any strength exercise you can do in a commercial or home gym, without all the bulky, space-consuming equipment.

So, how does the trainer plus actually work? It’s more complex than simply setting a weight and lifting it. The Trainer+ uses artificial intelligence to adapt to your needs. Translation: the weight will dynamically shift mid-set. If you’re flying through your set, the Trainer+ will recognise it and add resistance. If you’re struggling through those last few reps, the Trainer+ will lighten the load.

It’s not just the futuristic aspect of the Trainer+ that appeals. AI is all the rage nowadays, and to justify its price tag, the Trainer+ has to do more than simply spark initial curiosity. Thankfully, it does.

Strength training is important to me, but these days I tend to prioritise running and cardio – although, I was a six-days-in-the-gym-per week kind of guy in the past. I’m not bold enough to assume that everyone is the same as me, but the point is, strength training exists in a grey area for me right now. I don’t like the idea of a gym membership siphoning funds from my income every week when I feel like I’m not getting enough value for what I’m spending. Nor am I willing to fork out for a slew of pricey equipment to build a home gym, when it could very easily rot in my garage barely used – or worse, end up on the nature strip if I move houses and don’t have room for it anymore.

The Trainer+ is a refreshing alternative to these options. To see if it could surpass them and live up to the hype, I tested it out for myself. Here’s how it went.

What we like about the Vitruvian Trainer+

The frame:

If your biggest barrier to starting a home gym is finding the space to keep equipment, the Trainer+ is a godsend. The entire machine is only around the size of a treadmill’s track and weighs about 36kg. It has wheels and is ultra-portable, able to be moved with ease and stored in places you wouldn’t dream of stuffing gym equipment into (I usually kept it under my couch).

Despite its advanced capabilities, the Trainer+’s design is surprisingly minimalistic. It requires no installation, simply plug it in and start it up. No assembly and de-assembly are required before and after use, perfect for when you’re trying to squeeze in a quick workout.

The AI:

Back in February, Vitruvian founder Jon Gregory gave me a hint of just how intelligent the Trainer+’s artificial intelligence is. “One of the key features of our AI is its ability to dynamically adjust the weight resistance in real-time. Whether a user needs more challenge or less, our AI responds,” he said. At the time, I had my doubts. AI has proven to be a temperamental beast. For every advancement, there are myriad teething issues that prove we still have a long way to go. The Trainer+ is the exception in this case, not the rule.

The Trainer+ does require some human input. You don’t just pick up the gear and start a set, expecting the platform to automatically adjust. Instead, you set a desired starting weight, and from there the Trainer+ will intuitively do the rest. It’s surprisingly quick – and equally effective. Not only does this ensure you get the most out of every rep, tracking across workouts means the Trainer+ knows what you need to do to make progress in the future. As Jon Gregory previously told me, “You’re always challenged just enough to improve, but not so much that you risk burnout or plateauing.”

The versatility:

Vitruvian advertises the Trainer+ as an all-in-one home gym. That’s a big call, but the machinery more than lives up to it. The Trainer+ is compatible with a wide range of attachments, from basic handles and short bars to ropes and pump handles for rapid movement. In practice, this means you can perform just about any exercise that you would in the gym. When scrolling through the more than 200 potential exercises on the Vitruvian app, I was taken aback by the plethora of available options.

For the most part, the Trainer+ deftly tackles whatever you throw at it, with most exercises feeling almost exactly like they would with free weights or on regular equipment – with the added adaptive AI bonus. There are a few exercises, however, that don’t function quite as well. In particular, the Trainer+ can struggle with some exercises that require heavier weight, but use less sturdy attachments. For example, bench press with the long bar was perfectly fine, but attempting chest press with handles often resulted in shaky cables, as the equipment struggled to handle some extra force. Overall, the Trainer+ still held up to standard for most exercises.

The app interface:

Perhaps the most impressive part of the Trainer+ is the ability of the Vitruvian app to work in tandem with the machine to create a seamless workout experience. The app allows you to design your own workout, or select a premade itinerary that caters to specific focuses. Moreover, the app is as intuitive as the Trainer+ itself, recording workout data and providing performance insights and metrics. Gone are the days when you needed to carry around a notebook at the gym and note down every performance detail.

The verdict

I came into my test of the Vitruvian Trainer+ mostly curious about the capabilities of its AI. Plus, as a Men’s Health writer, when anything is proclaimed the ‘future of fitness’, I’m duty-bound to investigate. Typically, such a claim would be nothing more than naturally exaggerative marketing parlance, but in the case of the Trainer+, it’s hard to disagree.

The Trainer+ stood up to all my rigorous testing, withstanding just about everything I challenged it with and quelling many of my doubts about the ability of AI to be advanced enough to have applications in fitness. Whether you’re a workout hobbyist just trying to stay fit and maintain muscle mass, or an acolyte of iron attempting to crush PBs and chisel out an even buffer physique, the Trainer+ is worth your consideration. As for me, it’s safe to say that my gym membership is in peril.

The WHOOP 4.0 is worth the hype. A comprehensive review https://menshealth.com.au/the-whoop-4-0-is-it-worth-the-hype-a-comprehensive-review/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 03:00:33 +0000 https://menshealth.com.au/?p=57479 We strapped on the WHOOP 4.0 to evaluate the fitness world's hottest new wearable and decide if it's worth the investment

The post The WHOOP 4.0 is worth the hype. A comprehensive review appeared first on Men's Health Magazine Australia.

]]>
The WHOOP 4.0 has stormed onto the fitness tracker market and has quickly climbed to the top of the fitness wearable ladder as the must-have trendy wrist accessory.

Despite its small size, the WHOOP 4.0 is versatile. It can be worn on your wrist or biceps and manages to blend into almost any workout ‘fit. Once its around your wrist, pull the clasp down to close and secure the band; like a new pair of shoes, it just needs a little testing period before you find the sweet spot, after which you’re locked in.

The design of the WHOOP 4.0 veers from the usual watch-type wearables on the market with its unique lock-in design, though admittedly, the design setup is comfortable. Some of the world’s most prominent athletes, such as LeBron James, Michael Phelps, Virat Kohli and AFL superstars the Daicos brothers, have all been caught sporting the tracker.

So the real question remains: is the WHOOP 4.0 worth the investment? Is it worth giving in to the groovy commercials and sleek marketing? And what kind of athlete does the strap suit best?

Below, we provide a thorough, first-hand (or wrist) evaluation of the WHOOP 4.0 Strap and detail the reasons why we love it.

WHOOP 4.0

What we like about the WHOOP 4.0

1.WHOOP app

The interface is found via the WHOOP App, which you will need to download on your smartphone. The interface features a stack of visual actions that might cause a touch of chaos for those unfamiliar with wearable technology. It’s not until you start clocking your first few workouts and nights of sleep that the interface becomes easier to decipher and once you’ve got it, you never look back.

Displaying graphs with your average heart rate, maximum heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), and the calories burned throughout your workout, WHOOP also calculates your workout strain – a fancy term for how hard you trained on a particular day. It tracks how rigorous you trained throughout the day and how well you slept. You will also receive a recovery score to decide whether you should hit the gym or hit the snooze button and take a rest day.

The app also allows you to filter through past days and access old data about your body and its performance.

2. Comprehensive activity tracking

The WHOOP 4.0 tracks various activities, including the usual running, cycling and high-Intensity workouts, to more niche activities like snowboarding and jiu-jitsu. For stressed out NRL and AFL fans, there’s even an activity for just sitting on the couch watching your team play. The wide range of possible activity selections lets you tailor your exercise or recreational activities accordingly, which suits almost every type of athlete. After your session, the device will provide a detailed rundown of your workout, such as heart rate zones, calories burned and workout strain.

For example, after my 47-minute high-intensity workout, I had an average heart rate of 143 bpm, a maximum heart rate of 179 bpm, and 567 total calories burned, much more than my 100-calorie ping-pong session the night before.

I was also given a rundown of exactly which zones each minute of my workout fell into regarding my heart rate. From a restorative zone of less than 50 per cent to my blistering 1 minute in zone 5 (90 – 100 per cent). This rundown is a cracking analysis for any athlete wanting to know when exactly their body exerts the most energy.

3. Sleep tracking

Sleep tracking was by far the device’s most in-depth and impressive aspect. The WHOOP 4.0 tracks every second of your total and restorative sleep (the body’s regenerative sleep stage) by pin-pointing how much light, deep, and REM sleep you manage to cram into a night. Sleep tracking is simple: without touching anything, fall asleep and let the magic begin. Your WHOOP will pick up every little detail and give you a play-by-play report once you wake up.

The app suggests how much sleep you require to either “get by”, “perform”, or “peak”. Each category directly correlates to how well you recovered from the day before and how ready you are to take on the upcoming 24 hours.

I must admit, I’ve become quite the sleep score enthusiast. Waking up, I feel like a kid on Christmas morning, eager to check if I’ve beaten my previous night’s score, because who doesn’t love some healthy competition with themselves. As you can see, the interface is also user friendly for those tired morning eyes, showing you all the relevant figures and stats as soon as you wake.

4. Battery life

One of the big takeaways from the WHOOP 4.0 band is the fact that they aren’t kidding about it never having to leave your wrist. While with some trackers, taking the wearable off to charge can become a nuisance, only for them to last a day or two before needing to be re-charged, the WHOOP 4.0 cranks out four to five days of battery life when fully charged. A further bonus is that you only need to charge a small battery pack separately. When you need to charge the band itself, simply connect the battery pack to the WHOOP sensor and the band will begin charging; all while you’re still on the move. It’s as easy as that.

5. Artificial intelligence coach

A helpful feature of this device is the built-in WHOOP AI coach. It allows you to ask fitness-related questions, such as how to reduce your stress levels, improve your sleep performance, enhance your morning routine, or determine the optimal strain levels for your day. The AI coach is personalised to your specific needs and provides a rather cool and contemporary variation of fitness support.

6. No Screen

Yes, screen exclusion was initially a concern before using the WHOOP 4.0 strap. However, you can see the thinking behind it: not having a screen eliminates distractions and the possibility of chipped or damaged glass faces, which would be another headache altogether.

To some it might feel odd, but not having the added noise of notifications or a light-up display allows the WHOOP to subtly do its job without you thinking you have a wearable on in the first place.

Who is a WHOOP 4.0 best for?

The WHOOP 4.0 strap is reserved for the wrists of elite athletes. In saying that, however, the wearable would better suit those already established as regular gym goers or basic fitness enthusiasts. Beginners or those in that introductory ‘talking’ stage with fitness and the gym might find the WHOOP 4.0 band overwhelming in its data analysis. In that case you’re better leaving the graphs and numbers alone until you decide what form of exercise suits you best; trust us, wearables and fitness data aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

The biggest takeaways from the WHOOP 4.0 strap remain its ability to track sleep, how well you’ve recovered from your daily strain and how much strain your body can endure the following day. If you are an athlete who has progressed into caring about specific recovery, sleep, and performance data, this wearable is perfect for you. Those who enjoy playing sports, both competitively and recreationally, and those who also enjoy a sweaty cardio and high-intensity gym session will also find this wearable a perfect fit.

It’s comfortable, subtle, and incredibly easy to forget about, getting all the work done in the background and firing off the data directly to your WHOOP app. It’s unique, thats for sure, from the abnormal design to the amusing name ‘Whoop‘. That being said, it’s these quirky differences and what the device can quietly dissect about your health, that make it easy to see why the WHOOP 4.0 is having such an impact in the world of fitness tech.

The post Step up your recovery game with these compression boots appeared first on Men's Health Magazine Australia.

]]>
IF YOU’RE ALL ABOUT pounding the pavement, hooked on running, cycling, or taking on the field, you know that recovery is the name of the game. After all, you can’t be a star athlete or smash those Strava goals if your legs feel like lead. Sure, you could go the traditional route with nutrition and sleep, but why not shake things up?

We’re talking about the magical world of compression boots. These self-inflating sleeves may look like something out of a Robocop movie, but trust us, they’re the real deal. Compression boots help improve blood flow and reduce inflammation from those tight muscles by applying pressure to different points on your legs and feet. Your worst enemy when training will be tight legs, and it doesn’t take an expert to tell you that running on aching calves or a sore hammy, as unbearable as it might be, could only cause further injury.

How do compression boots work?

Welcome to optimal tissue health through sequential compression. Sounds pretty fancy, but these boots enhance blood circulation, delivering much-needed oxygen and nutrients to your muscles, promoting cellular repair, and reducing inflammation.

Compression boots are fabric boots that cover feet, lower legs, and thighs and contain multiple chambers. Each sleeve fills with air to compress one section of the lower body at a time, starting at the feet and working up towards the hip. This process is called intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC). Medical professionals use it to reduce leg swelling in patients with severe health conditions. Compression boots help push deoxygenated blood from the lower body back towards the heart.

It’s like having a personal masseuse without any awkward small talk. And the best part? All you have to do is sit back, relax, and let the boots work their magic. That’s right; there is no need to lift a finger. So, let’s jump in and check out some of the best compression boots to get your hands on and get those legs in tip-top shape.

I Tried the Peloton Tread – Here’s the Verdict https://menshealth.com.au/peloton-tread-verdict/ Mon, 13 Feb 2023 02:12:56 +0000 https://www.menshealth.com.au/?p=50156 The world-renowned Peloton Tread is finally coming down under and is revolutionising how we workout. I tried the fabled Tread and for the first time in my life, running was fun.

The post I Tried the Peloton Tread – Here’s the Verdict appeared first on Men's Health Magazine Australia.

]]>
Running is in our DNA. Take a quick peek outside and you’re bound to see flocks of people on their daily jog. Walk past a gym and every treadmill is likely to be taken. Tune into the Olympic Games and the headline events are always on the track. From the dawn of time, humans have been running – and not much has changed. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, right? There’s nothing quite comparable to the rush of endorphins and subsequent runners high that accompanies an intense workout, but the Peloton Tread takes runners high even higher.

The treadmills you’re familiar with might simply act as vessel for running on the spot, which can’t be improved. The Peloton Tread elevates that experience. Courtesy of a holistic approach to health and fitness that encompasses everything from yoga and hike’s to running and strength workouts. So, what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? Or in this case, when your insatiable drive for fitness meets the innovation of the Peloton Tread. The answer is a treadmill that’s revolutionising the way we workout.

A core aspect of the Tread experience is exertainment, a dynamic combination of fitness and entertainment. A recent study from the University of Technology Sydney proved that the integrated and interactive elements of exertainment have a positive effect on exercise motivation and enjoyment. Peloton is pioneering the exertainment movement, meaning that the Tread will keep you coming back for more.

With a seemingly endless range of classes and workouts available, the Tread is designed to suit every type of runner. Whether it’s a fresh-faced newbie or a hardened marathon veteran, all users can find the right workout. I fall somewhere towards the middle of that spectrum. But before I go into further detail about my experience with the Tread, a bit of background.

Prior to my test of the Tread, I would describe myself as a low effort runner. I’ve gone on the occasional run two to three times per week around local parks or on a treadmill at the gym, but I wouldn’t dream of taking on something like Sydney’s annual City2Surf event, or anything over 10km for that matter. I’ve never challenged myself to take the next step and committed to a consistent running routine. That changed with the Tread.

When first logging into the tread, it’s easy to be overwhelmed, or even intimidated by the colossal amount of classes on offer. At first, I didn’t know where to start. Presented with a seemingly endless screen of potential workouts, I used the filter tool to narrow it down to 30-minute classes. From there, I essentially picked the first class that had an interesting title and a resonant genre of music. It was not an easy workout. But it shouldn’t have been. A half hour HIIT class was certainly an audacious choice for my first workout and it would usually be too difficult, but seeing my total output register on a leaderboard and near-constant motivational messages from an instructor pushed me just enough to get through it. From there, I was hooked.

For the last few years, my typical run would look something like this: A quick warm up, a few classic workout songs and a fairly consistent pace throughout. These runs were drab, boring and unfulfilling. That was no longer a problem with my Tread. Which reinvigorates running with interactive features that make you feel like you’re in a class or training group. The ability to take a class, have an instructor tell me to stretch and warm up, all while virtually high fiving other Peloton users currently in that class, gave me the push I needed to run almost every day.

Before my experience with the Tread, I could run a kilometre in around six minutes. Less than a month later my kilometre split was down to a sub 4:30 time. I could probably go faster, but when my Peloton class instructors tell me to ease up, I listen. After all, they probably know best. They barely break a sweat and somehow manage to keep conversing with users throughout the workout.

Beyond the tangible changes in my splits and average pace, the mental overhaul the Tread created was drastic. Going for a run used to feel like a chore. Now as soon as I finish a workout, I start planning my next one, which is made easy by the Tread, which allows the scheduling of workout’s so you can squeeze one into a lunch break, right before bed, or the early hours of the morning.

Enough about my own experience with the Peloton Tread, allow me to highlight a handful of the innovative features that endeared the machine to me and revolutionised the way I run.

Endless Classes For Every Type Of Runner

The Peloton Tread is designed to suit every level of runner. With a variety of classes catering to user’s at beginner, intermediate and advanced stages of their fitness journey’s. Whether you’ve literally never stepped on a treadmill before or you’re a regular marathon runner, you’ll be able to find the right workout in the Tread’s constantly updating catalogue. Running is only the beginning, you’ll find hours of content on the Tread that has nothing to do with running. With a variety of walking, strength and yoga classes emphasising Peloton’s holistic approach to fitness.

I stuck to the intermediate classes for the most part, but one afternoon, out of sheer curiosity, I ventured into an advanced workout known as ‘Thunder 45’. Instructor Adrian William’s proceeded to punish me for my naivety in a gruelling 45-minute sweat fest. Too tough for me, but I’d imagine a high-performance athlete would love it.

Unique Leaderboard And Interactive Features

The Peloton Tread’s interactive feature’s are ideal for a runner that loves some healthy competition. By tracking your total energy output during workouts, users can see where they stand amongst other Peloton users in real time on a highly competitive leaderboard. When you need a break and decide to ease up on your run, you’ll see your ranking start to drop. Trust me, it’s the perfect motivational push you need to get back up to speed.

Beyond the tangible features is a sense of belonging in the Peloton community. On the Tread, you’re united with others like yourself with a similar drive for fitness. Instructors regularly remind you of this, with callouts like “one Peloton” reinforcing the feeling of running in a group. For those who find working out to be a lonely venture, that won’t be an issue with the Tread.

Run Anywhere In The World

My personal favourite feature of the Tread is the ability to go on scenic runs, walks and hikes to a plethora of picturesque locations around the world. From speeding through the busy streets of New York City in the USA to hiking around mountainous Glencoe in Scotland.

The Tread’s filter system shines in this feature. Whether I want to go for a quick urban jog or a lengthy countryside hike, it’s easy to find the perfect place to do it by filtering through distance and time.

High-Tech Hardware

The Tread doesn’t just have plenty of classes. The machine has a range of innovative high-tech hardware designed to create safe, ergonomic and distraction free workouts. With a massive 23.8” HD touchscreen and a four-speaker sound system providing an immersive experience, the Tread keeps you focused on your training session. While a sleek design with no front bumper and a carbon steel frame means the Tread is built to last.

Control knobs on the Tread’s arms have a jump feature, allowing users to quickly jump between speeds and inclines without needing to fiddle with the controls. As for safety, the tread lock fends off unwanted attention with a four digit passcode that users must enter to begin a workout. A safety key also immediately stops the tread, in case you come off during an overly rigorous session.

The Peloton Tread was exactly what I needed to revamp my fitness routine. The Tread goes on sale in Australia from the 16th of February. For more information and details on the Tread, visit the Peloton website here.

We tested the best and rated them on comfort, connectivity and overall audio awesomeness.

There are two types of people: First, those who hate to listen to music while working out. They prefer to hear their surroundings and breathing, or relish the silence as a time to think and ponder. The second? Those who can’t workout without their music. No tunes means no workout. Whichever camp you fall into, we’re not going to judge.

Whether you prefer to listen to music, a podcast, or tune into sports while getting your sweat on, you’ll need a solid pair of workout earbuds to make it happen. So investing in the ones that are truly built for working out.

1. The Budget Bangers: JLab Go Air Sport

PROS: They’ve got the same features as pricier earbuds – noise blocking, voice assistance, EQ controls – but you won’t be as financially devastated if you lose them. The battery also runs for a holy-whoa 32-plus hours with its charging case.

CONS: The bass can boom too hard, which can lower sound quality overall. So it’s great for Kendrick, but only so-so for Bruce.

BOTTOM LINE: With a water-resistant, tough-as-nails build, these buds are amazing
if you tend to beat up your tech.

Our Rating: 4/5

$69.95, jlab.com

2. The Constant Companions: Sony LinkBuds

PROS: Their odd yet clever open-ring design lets you listen while the buds auto-adjust to ambient noise. That’s great for taking calls on the go or playing podcasts while running errands, so you can tune in anytime without dropping out of your surroundings.

CONS: While ambient sound is clutch in certain situations, the LinkBuds’ noise-cancelling mode is more noise-limiting.

BOTTOM LINE: They’re small, comfortable and practical. You could very well wear these all day, every day.

Our Rating: 4.5/5

3. The Workout Wingmen: Amazon Echo Buds

PROS: This second-gen model is lighter and stronger, with better noise cancellation and overall audio quality. A suite of ear tips and stays prevents pop-outs during even the sweatiest workouts.

CONS: You’d expect a longer battery life given the hardware upgrades. And though manual control is easy, Alexa commands can glitch.

BOTTOM LINE: The sound quality whips – and you can customise the fit, making them hardly noticeable during a tough set or gruelling run.

Our Rating: 4/5

4. The Ultimate Upgrade: Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Generation)

PROS: Apple’s new model raises the bar without raising the price. An enhanced tech chip delivers bright and booming sound quality, hush-hush noise cancellation and potent battery life. The volume control sits on the stems of the buds, so adjusting is a cinch.

CONS: No stabilising clips means these could fall off during exercise.

BOTTOM LINE: Apple’s best-sounding earbuds are worth it for iOS users.

Our Rating: 4.5/5

Plus, six more…

5. Beats by Dre Powerbeats Pro Wireless Earbuds

The flashiest name in audio doesn’t sit on the sidelines at the gym. The greatest from Beats are the PowerBeats Pro, which are the company’s first true wireless headphones and the only earphone outside the AirPods to feature Apple’s H1 chip for seamless smartphone connection on iOS and Android. Add a sweat-resistant design, long-lasting battery, and MH fitness director Ebenezer Samuel’s rating of “Superman pushup proof”and you might just have the perfect gym companion. These come in multiple colorways, too, and will be your best headphones for sweating in.

The most surprising part might be the price. At around $379, they’re actually reasonable—especially considering the brand-name Beats moniker—and roughly $20 less than Apple’s flagship AirPods Pro. With more than 65,000 overwhelmingly positive ratings on Amazon alone, these might be the best-selling, workout-friendly earbuds you can buy in 2023.

6. Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II

Bose’s QuietComfort Earbuds II pack a superior level of noise cancellation that rivals or beats any other headphone on the market. The only other headphones that come close are Apple’s latest AirPods Pro (2nd gen). However, we still find the QuietComfort to drown out noise like no other—whether it be on a plane, the subway, or next to the meathead that’s yelling way too loud during his reps at the gym. Bottom line: If noise-cancellation is your primary buying decision, these are the way to go.

It’s hard to find much to dislike about these other than the price. At around $400, they’re among the most expensive ear buds on the market right now. But, if only the best workout headphones will do and you’ve got a little holiday spending money to burn, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better pair.

7. 1MORE Aero Wireless Earbuds

1MORE proves that you don’t have to spend $200 (or more) to land a great pair of wireless earbuds. The Aero Wireless Earbuds offer many of the same great features as earbuds and headphones that cost twice as much. We’re talking: rich, spatial audio, six mics for crystal-clear calls at the gym, wireless charging, and a solid 28-hour battery life (with the included carry case). Plus, the adaptive active noise cancellation is among the best we’ve seen at this price.

At just over $150, there’s little about these that we don’t like. The fit isn’t quite as a snug as other models we’ve tested, and the companion app (for customizing the EQ) is a bit too finnicky. But, overall, these are a solid midrange pair of earbuds with the chops to compete with much bigger (and pricier) brand-name models. For most workouts, these are damn-near-perfect.

8. JBL Tune 225TWS True Wireless Earbud Headphones

Over 11,000 five-star reviews are attributed to the JBL Tune. They carry 25 hours of battery life (including the charging case) and a respectable level of bass when you consider their price point. What these headphones deliver is honest performance at a solid price. They retail for around $180, but you’ll often find them on sale for as much as 50% off. The sleek design is simple and modern, and we like that they’re available in half-a-dozen bold colors, too.

On the downside, some reviewers not that they don’t last as long as more premium options. But, honestly, if they get worn down too quick you can replace a new pair without feeling it in your wallet (especially when they go on sale). Our advice is to designate these for the gym and save your nicer headphones for everyday use. You won’t regret this budget-friendly buy.
