The quest to surf the perfect wave is one that continues to excite surfers around the world. From those chasing surfing’s equivalent of Everest in the form of 100-foot waves, to the more safety-inclined who simply like to put on a show for locals, few sports rely so heavily on the natural elements quite like surfing. But while this unpredictability and surrender is precisely what drives many to take up the sport, for those just getting into surfing, few things can turn you off quite like eating sand for an hour as you feebly attempt to stand up in the open water. It’s this that has seen wave pools become the go-to option for those looking to be introduced to surfing, and the more adept surfers who simply want some consistency.
Though wave pools have come to take on a life form of their own overseas, the trend is a more recent development here in Australia. Thanks to Urbnsurf, the ability to surf some artificial waves became a reality when the park’s first location opened outside Tullamarine airport. An instant success that saw many flock to its open doors, it seems the demand for wave pools is only increasing and finally, Sydney Siders can rejoice as Urbnsurf’s next expansion will take place here in Sydney’s very own Olympic park, with a slated opening for summer 2022.
Much like its Melbourne venue, the Sydney Urbnsurf park will look to cater to everyone from absolute beginners to the buddying professionals. Across 3.6 hectares, the park will offer consistent waves that are perfect for every surfing ability, as well as host clinics and surfing lessons. And for those who don’t mind watching surfing but hate the idea of clambering to a flimsy board, don’t stress. There’s even a pool that will be open all day and night.
As well as the actual surfing pool, there will be working spaces spread out across the centre, two restaurants, a rooftop bar, family-friendly leisure pool, skate park, surf academy, beach cabanas, a yoga studio, surf shop, hot tubs, and a playground for kids. Basically, if ever there was a new capital for surfing, consider it this one.
With construction taking places this year, Urbnsurf Sydney is expected to open in the summer of 2022 and to be totally honest, we can’t wait. Given the popularity of the Melbourne location, it seems inevitable that Sydney is set to get the next big thing when it comes to surfing and we can only count down the days until it opens.
