Before we begin, let’s agree on something: for someone approaching 51-years-old, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is in unbelievable shape. As someone with a background in professional American football, wrestling and performing hardcore action scenes — with decades of resistance training under his (weight) belt to boot — DJ is a fitness icon for men half his age and has made a name for himself as one of Hollywood’s strongest leading men.
This physical prowess is what drives tens of thousands of frantic Google searches, as those desperate for Johnson’s workouts attempt to unearth the plan that got him into such gargantuan shape. But one mystery has defied the internet: where are Johnson’s six-pack abs? He’s got the core strength and the low-level body fat required to make them pop, after all.
Such was the question posed to Johnson during a recent WIRED ‘Autocomplete’ interview, where DJ answered some of the internet community’s most burning questions. Read out by his Jungle Cruise co-star Emily Blunt, the question was “What’s wrong with The Rock’s abs?”
“That’s so f****d up!” replied Johnson in response to the question that hit out at his physique. “There’s nothing wrong with them, no. Here’s the thing. I think because on Instagram, all these Instagram fitness models have these incredible six, eight, 12, 24-pack stomachs.”
“I got like a five-and-a-half pack, sometimes a four-and-a-half pack,” he continued. “But the problem was – which a lot of people don’t know – I tore in a wrestling match, I tore the top of my quad off my pelvis, it went bang, in a wrestling match.
“And then what that did was that caused a chain reaction and it tore my abdomen wall, so then I had to do a triple hernia emergency surgery, of a tear, a tear and a tear [pointing to each tear].
Sounds like a rough ride — one that definitely nullifies any unwarranted keyboard commentary. “These f*****g a******s who are Googling ‘what’s wrong with The Rock’s abs?’ Well, it’s called a wrestling match for 45 minutes and the top of my quad popped off my pelvis, and my adductor popped off my pelvis,” said Johnson.
“And the pain I went through… I gotta fix that s***. I’m gonna Google ‘what did The Rock overcome?'”
A very valid reason, you’ll agree.
