In a video interview with Men’s Health, the 72-year-old shared the recipe for his go-to protein shake. At first, it all looks pretty ordinary – almond milk, banana, cherry juice and protein powder. Aside from the fact that he literally plops an entire egg into the mix… shell and all.
Sure, it seems a bit weird but it’s also a pretty genius way to sneak in extra goodness. Eggshells are rich in calcium (just half may provide enough to meet the average adult’s daily RDI). Plus, they’re a good source of strontium, fluoride, magnesium and selenium, which are important minerals for maintaining bone health. In addition, the membrane (the part of the egg attached to the shell which separates it from the eggwhite) contains collagen, glucosamine and other nutrients that have been proven to benefit the joints.

“This drink you could serve at any health bar or any other type of bar,” Schwarzenegger says of his concoction. “I wish I could pour it into the lens to share with all the people out there because this is so yummy.”
Feeling fancy? You can also add in a splash of Schnapps or tequila. Worth noting: Arnie recommends drinking the softer version whenever you like – not just before or after a workout.
“I don’t believe in this ‘pre and post’ because it’s all a bunch of nonsense,” he explains. “The reality of it is the body doesn’t care. The body just loves protein and vitamins throughout the whole day, 24 hours a day.” We’ll take your word on that, Arnie.
Keen to give the shake a crack? (Pardon the pun). Here’s the full recipe below:
Ingredients
- 250ml of almond milk
- 60ml of cherry juice
- 1 banana
- 1 scoop of protein powder
- 1 raw egg (including shell)
